The Two Server-Hosting Options for SMBs

The Two Server-Hosting Options for SMBs

Businesses need to make a decision about where they want to host their central infrastructure, and with so many options available to them nowadays, it’s often a matter of the demands on the data and applications required. Really, the decision comes down to two options: host your central hardware onsite or host it in the cloud. Let’s take a look at the debate now.

The first consideration for hosting is what you are going to need the computing that is hosted for. If you have been hosting your own hardware right along, and it works for you, you’re probably going to find that a move to the cloud is going to present some unnecessary problems. That said, if you are trying to unveil new services or using your new servers to expand your business’ computing reach, the cloud is going to be just what you are looking for. Let’s look at some of the pros and cons of each scenario.

In-House Servers

With the cloud now a completely viable alternative to hosting your own servers, considering purchasing new central hardware when the time comes may be more difficult than before, but there are some serious benefits of having your own computing hardware onsite. First of all, you physically own the machines. They are expensive, no question, but there is something to be said about having complete control over every element of your central computing infrastructure. With in-house servers, you can guarantee that you can approach your IT support the way you want.

Another benefit is that your business isn’t dependent on a fast Internet connection in order to access your computing resources. If for some reason the Internet goes down, accessing a cloud server becomes impossible. This is also a major consideration if your business handles highly-sensitive data that requires compliance. While cloud servers are more secure than they’ve ever been, the transmission over the Internet is still more accessible than simply moving data through an intranet.

Cloud Servers

With cloud servers, you can basically get anything you want nowadays. You can even get a virtual environment that will provide you with a blank slate. The biggest advantage of cloud servers is that you don’t have to worry about the massive costs associated with purchasing and supporting servers. For the small business, it can be the most cost-effective option, despite having to consistently pay for hosting and usage fees.

Cloud servers are also extremely scalable. When you host your own hardware, there is a tendency to underutilize the servers, but when you purchase cloud resources, you will get what you pay for, nothing more, nothing less. If your business decides to go the cloud-hosted route (as many new businesses do), you will need to control the monthly costs and do what you can to ensure that your data is safe while in transit.
